T.R.E.W HORSES

Here you can meet some of the wonderful horses, past & present, who we have been lucky enough to come to know and love during their time with us.

Most of the below horses have now moved on to their new lives, in their new long term homes. Their stories do not end there, and we thoroughly enjoy following their progress with their new owners.

Astraea was one of the filly foals who made up the group of mares and foals that were rescued from a barren paddock in Bridgewater in early '07.

Tragically, despite our best efforts, Astraea could not recover from her ordeal. We had to make the decision to let Astraea go 8 weeks into her care.

Angel is a very timid little one who was surrendered to TREW by her owner. We suspect may be in foal. Aside from the physical rehabilitation that Angel is needing, there is much time needing to be spent with her, working on her confidence and trust issues.

Cherish is a Standardbred mare who was abandoned, with her yearling foal at foot, in a large paddock devoid of any feed whatsoever. She was in a critical condition when we were alerted to her plight, and in all honesty, I held no hope for her recovery whatsoever. Incredibly, she survived her ordeal, despite having lived by eating the timbers from a derelict shed for some time prior to her discovery.

Blaze is a gelding of unknown breeding or origin. He was abandoned on a property not belonging to his owner, and neglected for close to two years before the R.S.P.C.A were called to his aid. The R.S.P.C.A Inspector referred the property owner to T.R.E.W after all attempts to trace his owner had failed. The property owner arranged for his delivery to our Care Facility. When Blaze's health had improved, he was lucky enough to be offered a wonderful home with Natalie and her family, and now lives near Benalla in Victoria on a large property with horsey friends, and is absolutely spoiled rotten!

The Guyra horses were 66 adult horses, and 17 foals, bought by a pet food company as a 'job lot'. Many people rallied behind the effort to save them from this fate, and many good hearted people gave their time, resources, skills, and offered homes for these beauties. They are all now successfully re homed. T.R.E.W was not involved in a hands on sense in this mammoth effort, as they were located in another State. T.R.E.W however set up a page on the web site to provide photo's, updates, canvas for homes, and raise awareness of their plight.

Faith is a sweet mare who was taken to the saleyards by her previous owners who run a trail riding establishment. She is aged (around 20) and obviously no longer served a purpose for them. We bought Faith at the saleyards when the only bidder on her was the pet food buyer. We really couldn't watch this sweet old dame end up in a can in return for all her years of service. She has turned out to be all we suspected...gentle natured and kind to the core. She now lives at our Sanctuary and is occasionally ridden by the owner of the property on quiet strolls around the farm. She has fast been elevated in his list of favourites due to her accomodating and easy going attitude to life. Update on Faith...see TREW Miracle's page!

Wish is a Standardbred yearling who was found abandoned, along with her mother, Harmony. The breeder had no interest in caring for his horses, and was happy to surrender their care to T.R.E.W. Wish was completely untouched by human hand when we first began to visit her paddock to feed her, prior to transporting her back to the Care Facility. She was very weary, and very quick on her feet! Little Wishy was offered a permanent home by a lovely horsey family, who have worked wonders with her. Leigh made many trips out to work with her prior to taking her home. Wish is now living with Leigh and his family, and is a confident, friendly and cheeky youngster who is now growing like a weed!

Bonnie angel. Well this sad looking mare was a real diamond in the rough when T.R.E.W purchased her at the sales. A timid sweet girl, who apparently had spent most of her life as a Campdrafter. Bonnie was in a very poor condition when we brought her home, and very unhealthy within herself. Bonnie was offered a fabulous home with Janet when she was at the stage of being healthy, but still needing to gain more condition. Janet has done a brilliant job of continuing Bonnie's rehab, and I think anyone would agree that she is now an absolute knock-out. Bonnie has since been diagnosed with Navicular, which Janet is managing with the diligence that she has always shown in her care.

T.R.E.W Horses

Lucy is a Standardbred mare, abandoned, and in an emaciated condition when we first saw her. Her owner was more than happy to relinquish ownership and responsibility for her, and surrender her to T.R.E.W. She is unrecognisable these days, from the horse that we found.
Lucy lives the life of luxury now with Rhonda, who is renowned for the degree of care (spoiling) that she shows her horses.
Foxy is a lovely Appaloosa Warmblood mare. She was surrendered to T.R.E.W by her owner who was finding it difficult to care for her due to , on the understanding that we find her a brilliant home.

Somebody recognised Foxy on our site as a horse that had belonged, some time ago, to a friend of theirs, the lady who had in fact bred her. They contacted Wilma and, thanks to the wide reaching nature of the internet, Foxy was reunited with her breeder and first owner of 8 or so years, Wilma.
It could not have been a better outcome for her!

Harmony is Wish's dam. A Standardbred mare who, on the day we were first called to her paddock, was on the ground unable to rise, with her foal standing over her. This mare must be as tough as they come, as she was still feeding her 15 mth old foal in the condition she was in, and still very protective of her. Initially Harmony was homed with Carole and her family, who bent over backwards to help her fit in with their other horses, but she was ostracised and became quite aggressive towards them. We have now found her a home with a breeder, and Harmony is as happy as larry out in his broodmare paddock with the other girls.

Dawn is a Standardbred mare in her late teens, surrendered to T.R.E.W by her owner.

Dawn was very fortunate indeed, being offered a place at a Standardbred retraining facility in N.S.W.  from 'Kalimbah Standardbreds' has turned Dawn out for the Winter, and intends to bring Dawn in and begin her re-education as a riding horse in the Spring.

Lilly is a troubled and reserved lady, who was left at the sales by her owner, possibly for behavioural reasons. We found Lilly to intially be quite bitter towards humans, and completely untrusting.
She was in a very unhealthy and poor state when we brought her home, and has taken some time to come into herself. Through her assessment we discovered that she has a penchant for kicking quite visciously, and is very good at it! Despite the fact that she was slowly relaxing with us, and becoming more trusting and easy to handle, we could not in good consience re home her as a riding horse due to the likelihood that one day she may injure someone through her kicking.
Lilly will live permanently at the Sanctuary.

Harry is a lovely looking young man who has been dealt many blows in his short life. Another story of amazing coincidence, and a beautifully natured horse, despite it all. Harry was entrusted to T.R.E.W by our Veterinary Chiropractor, for the purpose of placing him in a brilliant home.
Harry did not come to us in poor condition, but did have a permanent disability which is the result of being pushed off a cattle truck as a foal. Harry broke his shoulder, and after dragging his leg around for weeks, was rescued by a Vet, and patched up to the best of her ability. He will never be able to be ridden. Harry now lives in the Wallan area, Victoria, with Karen and Simon, who were kind enough to offer him a permanent home with their other horses.

Barbie is a Waler x Arab mare, and every inch the exhibitionist! T.R.E.W purchased Barbie at the sales, and I don't think any explaination as to why is needed, she's just a spectacular looking young lady. Barbie came to us in good condition, with no issues that we were aware of, and apparently broken to both Harness and Saddle. Barbie was here for a matter of mere weeks before a you
