For those interested in acquainting themselves with the 'Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act'.

Please be advised that the Animals Legislation Amendment (Animal Care) Act 2007 received Royal assent on Tuesday 11th December 2007. The majority of the provisions of this Act commence today (Wednesday 12th December 2007), however there are some clauses which have a delayed commencement date.

The Animals Legislation Amendment (Animal Care) Act 2007 contains provisions amending the Domestic (Feral & Nuisance) Animals Act 1994, Impounding of Livestock Act 1994 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986, and as a result, new versions of these Acts were introduced today.

WOW !  .....do we have news for you!

Our beautiful Faith, who we have retired out at the Sanctuary,
has presented us with an amazing surprise!

How's THAT for special!
We outbid the Knackery for Faith in Feb. of this year.
You can visit Faith's story, and more pics of her stunning daughter on Faith's page.

We have set a date for our upcoming Open Day & get together, so get out those diaries and mark down March 23!

We are working hard at making it a wonderful day for all of our visitors, and look forward to having the opportunity to meet those who can make it. We are hoping to make it a fun, educational, and enjoyable day....full of horsey learning, horsey chat, and maybe just a little bit of horsey shopping :)

Details of what we have planned for the day will be posted as soon as possible.

We would like to thank the amazing Carlos Tabernaberri from 'Whispering Acres', who has been kind enough to support T.R.E.W by paticipating in our day, and giving of his time "for the horses". What a guy....To quote Carlos, "The horses have given me my way of life, so I give a lot back to them too, and to people like you who are doing it for the horses."

Carlos will be doing a demonstration 'Through the Eyes of the Horse', and will be happy to chat to all throughout the day.

Stand by for updates, and please let us know if you think you have something that you think may contribute to making it a great horsey day!

Many thanks to Committee members Jen & Clies,
who did a fine job of safely transporting the little one to the care facility today.

Big Day Out a great success!

Tracie & Nadia report back that their weekend went very well. One person pulled out at the last minute (a family crisis) but everyone else was very keen. Thank you to Belinda, who apparently had a lesson and a massage and refused to accept change out of $100!!!!!! At this stage, Tracie & Nadia have managed to make $300 for T.R.E.W through their efforts, with a couple more sessions to do, and have collected several rugs as well.

A lovely social Picnic was enjoyed on the Sunday, with much horse chat and good food. Jen Knoetze and Clies Russell from the T.R.E.W Committee were able to attend, along with Tanya, a supporter and member of the T.R.E.W Forum.

Nadia and Tracie plan to make this event an annual one, and are currently discussing the logistics. It is likely that next year these two talented ladies will run it over a week, which will make it easier for more people to participate.

Thank you so much to all involved in this event, from the organisers, to those who took advantage of the opportunity for lessons and massages.

We look forward to *Big Day Out '08* being even bigger & better!

TRAMP & TRAV'S BIG DAY OUT!

" To coincide with the inaugural OHF get together Picnic Tramp and Travers are offering their services over the weekend of November 23-25 to raise some much needed funds for Bec and the Triple R Horse Welfare Syndicate. Triple R are a very special group of people that have achieved some incredible outcomes for neglected and abused horses. You can find out more about them by visiting www.triplerequinewelfare.org.

To do this we are offering lessons and horse massages to all the OHF members in the Yarra Valley. As you know, Travers is a trainee EFA/NCAS coach with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share, and Tramp is at the end of her first year of Equine Tactile Therapy - relaxation massage is her specialty! The cost for a 45 minute lesson or massage will be $30 (that's a half to a third of what you'd normally expect to pay!), with every cent going to Triple R. You can choose to have either or both, on one horse or several. Whatever tickles your fancy!

So if you'd like some tips to improve your position, learn more about lungeing, or find out what's so special about The Outside Rein, then Travers can help you, and what better way to top off a lesson than with a lovely relaxing massage for your four legged friend while Tramp explains the mysteries of Equine Musculature.

But wait, there's more! Now is the perfect time to clean out your tackroom, so if you have any rugs you no longer need we'd be more than happy to take them off your hands. Many of the horses at Triple R arrive in very poor condition and need careful rugging. It's really important that Bec can rug them according to their individual needs, but, as you can imagine, it's impossible to buy new rugs for every horse.

At this stage, we'll be available Friday evening, all of Saturday, and Sunday morning, leading up to the Picnic at midday. We want to raise as much money for TripleR as possible, so if you can spare a gold coin donation to attend the Picnic we'd really appreciate it.

We'll also be holding a raffle or competition of some sort on the day and you'll be able to purchase some of the fantastic Triple R Merchandise as well, (a great opportunity to buy some Christmas presents while supporting a wonderful organisation).

To take advantage of this great offer, while ensuring that some not so fortunate horses have a happy Christmas too, please register your expression of interest by emailing Tracie

If you could tell us:
- what services you'd like (and how many)
- whereabouts you are located
- what's the most suitable day and time
we'll do our best to organise it. If a few people live close together and want to meet at one place that would be even better. We'll try to fit in as many as we can, so the less travelling we need to do the more sessions we can fit in!
Tramp and Travers"

We have been asked to help out in re-homing this Standardbred horse, Shylock (I was told he was a TB - but guessing not by the photos!) He has been turned out for several years with a companion who has recently died and is now looking for a new home. As you can see he is in great condition. Here is what we know about him: He was ridden regularly by teenagers in his previous home. He has been turned out for some time with no/very little handling. He is in his late teens, and around 17hh. As far as I know he has only been fed hay and grass. He would make a great 'easy keeper' companion horse, or perhaps for someone who has the time to get him back up to speed - he may make a pleasure riding horse. Please email me if you think you may be able to take him, or know someone who may be interested.
Cheers, Christina

(Please note: Shylock is located on Bruny Island)

Some happy news to share re our last horse re homed, Blaze. His new owners have been spending a great deal of time in earning Blaze's trust, and in reassuring him. He has come to relax at Natalie's, and has made just incredible progress in a short period of time.

Those who followed Blaze's story would know that on arrival at our care facility he was extremely defensive, 100% untrusting, a complete unknown, and a very depressed boy. Nat and her daughter Alysha have sent me some wonderful shots of Blaze, taken over the past week. I hope you get as big a kick out of them as we do!

For those who haven't read Blaze's story, the first picture is one taken shortly after he arrived with us. The rest are Blaze at his new home, with his new best buddy Alysha on board!

Well done to Nat, Alysha, and most of all Blaze, for having enough courage to give give us humans another chance.

T.R.E.W acknowledges the national efforts underway to contain the spread of E.I and the importance of keeping Victoria E.I free. Consequently it is T.R.E.W’s recommendation that, for the foreseeable future, individual horses owners cease competing, traveling or transporting their horses to any venue, and that individuals observe stringent bio-security measures.

Further information on E.I can be obtained from:

Australian Horse Industry Council
Department of Primary Industry
National Pests & Disease Outbreaks

The nature of the work we do at T.R.E.W means that horses coming to our rehab property are highly susceptible to significant long term effects or death from secondary complications should they contract the virus.

In the short term, responsible practice means ceasing to admit horses unless there is absolutely no other option. This by no means implies that we have ceased to work for the well being of horses currently in need, rather that we wish to lead by example in our equine management at this crucial time, while also ensuring the continued health of the horses currently in residence at the property, one of which is due to foal tomorrow.

Please remember that now more than ever it is important that horse owners continue to be vigilant, observant, practice strict hygeine measures, and report all horses showing signs suspicious of E.I.

OWNERS FOUND TO HAVE ILLEGALLY MOVED HORSES INTO VICTORIA WILL BE PROSECUTED, AND HORSES MAY FACE DESTRUCTION.

The equine influenza hotline number is 1800 678 779 and it operates daily from 8am - 6pm. If you suspect disease in your horses, please call the Exotic Disease hotline on 1800 675 888.
